What is VPI and VCI settings of broadband connections?

by Sujith on 01/07/2010

Virtual Path Identifier (VPI) refers to an 8-bit (user to network packets) or 12-bit (network-network packets) field within the header of an Asynchronous Transfer Mode packet. The VPI, together with the VCI (Virtual Channel Identifier) is used to identify the next destination of a cell as it passes through a series of ATM switches on its way to its destination. VPI is useful to reduce the switching table for some Virtual Circuits which have common path. In simple words these two numbers simply tell the DSL equipment on both the sides that the communication to be established between them.vpi vci What is VPI and VCI settings of broadband connections?

Hello, I have STC ISP with ASL Internet plus STB TV. I have just thrown out the STC (Huawei) modem/router (due to erratic Internet performance) and installed a Thomson TG585 v8 ASL router, which gives great Internet performance (VPI/VCI 0.35) but now my STB internet TV is not working.

My tech contact in STC says that I need to input a second VPI/VCI (0.100). The TG585 does not seem to allow a second VPI/VCI. Is there a way to do it?

If not, does anyone know of a ASL modem/router that allows two VPI/VCI? (apart from reverting back to STC’s?). Thanks in advance.
Kevin

Sujit,
You are doing a great job !
May I also ask you my doubt ,please.
Can I use my ADSL ,D-Link Broad band wireless modem which i use in Hyderabad ,India, with BSNL landline connection , if I take it to London or to Sussex in the UK ?
I think there they have BT telephone line.
Would there be any configuration problem? ( technically )?
Would there be any administrative restrictions, that you are aware of ?

i shall be greatful for an early response ,kindly.
Thank you
Regards ,
dadster

If your ISP at London using ADSL technology, you can use the same modem there also.

I would also get the settings for IPTV in my country, is that possible.
