Tips to select a suitable Modem for BSNL broadband

by Sujith on 10/16/2009

BSNL WA 3002 G4 Wi fi ADSL Modem Tips to select a suitable Modem for BSNL broadbandBsnl offers following plans to select a Modem for their broadband connection

  1. Rent a Modem from BSNL
  2. Modem outright purchase form BSNL (one time payment)
  3. Modem purchase from BSNL (Through installements)
  4. Use your own ADSL Modem (purchased from open market)

There are four types of  ADSL Modems

  • Type 1: Type -I Modems are with one Ethernet Port and One USB Port (Eg: Nokia siemens C 2110, Utstar UT 300R, Smart AX MT 882 Utstar UT 300RTU, DLink GLB 502, 802 Etc)
  • Type 2: Type -II Modems having one Ethernet and one Wi Fi port each (Eg: Quidway WA 1003 A, Utstar WA3002-G1 etc)
  • Type 3: Type-III Modems are with four Ethernet ports (Eg: Smart Ax MT 841 type 3)
  • Type 4: Type-IV Modems are with Four Ethernet ports and with WI FI (ZTE ZXDSL 531, Siemens SL2-141, Smart AX MT 841 Type 4 etc)

Note: Most often Type four modems are termed as Type two by BSNL

Following  will help you to select a suitable Modem for your BSNL broadband connection.

Cost: BSNL providing ADSL Modems for very cheap rates. The rates of BSNL Modems

Modem Charges

Modem Sale Price (One time charges)

Type-IV

Rs. 40

If you purchase a Type -IV or type II  Modem from open market, it will cost around Rs 2500/- to 3000/-. BSNL is providing the same for Rs 1600/-.

Quality: The quality and reliability of BSNL Modems are average. BSNL supplied Modems often fail to work properly in poor signal to noice ratio conditions, means frequent disconnection problems are predominant for BSNL supplied Modems.

Rent: If you have heavy internet usage and your Modem runs round the clock, then it is a better option to rent the Modem from BSNL because the Modem will be replaced by BSNL on failure. If you purchase the Modem from BSNL or outside, the warranty will be only for one year.

Limited Internet usage: If you have a limited internet usage, then  it is better to purchase a Modem from BSNL (either one time or through installment scheme) because it is very much cost effective .

Purchase from open Market: The Modems like D link, Netgear and Lynk Sys   perform exceptionally well even in poor signal to ratio conditions also. That means if your house is at considerable distance from nearest BSNL exchange, naturally the line attenuation will be more and the cheap quality Modems fail to perform reliably.

Hi sir,
I am using D-link 2730U wifi modem. I am using it past one year on wards. My doubts are:
1.how can i see, clear the history of the websites that were logged in the router.
2, how can i monitor/traffic meter /bandwidth usage of the broadband connection from router to reduce my monthly bills. I am using Networx, Xirrus, netmeter software for monitoring only one pc .i have a laptop, desktop and my parents use Mobile Wifi for online radio, voip purpose. so, i want to know how much traffic utilizing totally from my router with web address history from all devices without installing Netmeter in every individual device.I am using Windows 7. I am waiting for ur reply.

Routers don’t keep the history of the visited websites. Clear the offline data and history from your browser.
No bandwidth monitoring facility exists in this router model. If your router is DDWRT compatible, then can try this hack

Hello Sir,
I am using Nokia Siemens SL2-141 Modem for BSNL BB from last two years. I am facing DSL connectivity problem from last 2-3 months. Due to that I need to switch off the modem & remove the ADSL cable from the back side and again put in the back again and restart it 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 times in a day to solve the problem . Now I got irritated of it…..

My Nokia Siemens SL2-141 Modem is working from last two years continuously 24×7. I am down loader. I use Bit torrent software. I down load large size files. And due to that my modem usage is very tough. So I want very rough & tough Modem by the performance.

Kindly suggest me BSNL BB compatible Wifi Modem from Open market. My Budget is 2k to 4k.

Thank You,

Before replacing the modem get your line verified. Frequent disconnection problem is often caused by line problems (Poor signal to noise ratio)
TP Link, Belkins, Netgear etc are good modems Go for N series modems. All modems are compatible with BSNL BB. You need to configure it. In case any problems you can contact me.

Hi Devershi,
As your Modem has four LAN slots, you need not to use two DSL Modems. Just purchase few meters of LAN cable and connect the second PC to that. You can’t use two DSL modems on one phone line simultaneously.

Hi Sujith

Thanks for sharing your valuable inputs with the members but however i would also request you to tell all of us the right make of the modem to be used in order to avoid the connectivity problems.

I have personal experienced VMC Brand modem and it really works well when compared to the other brands available in the market.

And also the price of the product is reasonably good and affordable and more over easily available in the market.

Sir,

I need your advice, as I feel, I face a peculiar problem.
I have BSNL broadbandwith outright purchased modem(requires 1A 5.2 V dc) – model # S4u+ with 4 ethernet ports and 1 USB ports.. and an input for DSL, with input-point from an adapter which has following ratings.
(Ref # 1) Input (to power adapter) AC 100 – 250 V, 50 Hz, 200 mA.
Output (to modem) DC, 5.2 v, 1 A.

I have been using this since 2010 June till last week (until 16th Sep 2012). Suddenly the adapter failed, it seems. I replaced it with my mobile charger(Ref. # 2) whose output rating is 5.3V, 550mA dc. First day it worked for more than an hour. From sencond time, after some 15-20 mins the adapter (of mobile charged gets feelable level of heating) and DSL started blinking. If I switch off the adapter for 10 mins., it cools down and starts working with modem for another 15-20 mins (ie untill it crosses certain level of heating as per its rating).

Y’day I bought new adapter having the following rating :
(Ref.# 3)Input : 100-350 V AC, 50/60 Hz, 150-100 mA
Output : 5.2 V, 1 A dc.

When I use this, the modem is powed ON but, DSL which gets ON only momentarily, then goes off. Not even blinking thereon.

Again when I use my mobile adapter (Ref.#2), modem powered ON.. and DSL works for 15-20 mins (untill this charged / adapter crosses some temperature limit it seems.. since this is rated for 550 mA, while modem maximum rating is 1A). (This might mean, the MODEM is faulty)

I understand Ref.# 2 behaviour (lower rating.. gets heated up in time, hence malfunctioning.. DSL fails). But, Ref.# 3 puzzles me.

The only thing I suspect with Ref.#3, though it gives DC o/p 5.3V, somehow it doesn’t deliver enough current.. not even 550 mA & may be lesser..like.. 400 mA. The possible reason I guess might be, it provided just enuough current to power ON modem, but could not make other functioneries since, DSL doesn’t respond at all..(my understand from this adapter behavioiur Ref.# 3)

What should be my next step ?.. .guidance Please.

Thanks

Sujith September 24, 2012 at 5:39 PM

Use an 8 Volt AC adapter. It will work. In high currents output voltage of your existing 5.2 volt adapter goes down (May be of substandard quality and rating) below 3 Volts.

Reply

madhavan September 24, 2012 at 5:19 PM

In continuation to my previous comment..

We have tested the (Ref.# 3) Adapter. It seems to give about ~500 mA only.
Testing is done this way.. I added 5 ohm resistance at the output and connected to AC source. As current (I) = V / R (ohms law), the measured voltage across the resistor was ~2.5 V. Hence I concluded that I = 2.5 v / 5 ohm = 0.5 Amp (ie 500 mA) & hence it didn’t make DSL to function, but could switch ON modem device.

Am I right ?

Thanks

Nowadays Modems from TP link get huge popularity among the broadband users in India. In terms of features TP link beat their competitors.
Poor quality modems will certainly affect speed and signal strength especially when the signal to noise ratio of your telephone line goes down.

By using a USB Wireless adapter, you can make your PC as a Wireless hotspot. A wireless adapter costs Rs 500 to 1000 by adding few hundreds more you can purchase a budget wireless router which can be used along with your existing modem to share internet connectivity without turning ON the PC.

500 to 1000 mtrs WiFi range is practically not possible. However by using multiple WiFi repeaters you can get it.

Sir, I have an EVDO card from BSNL. I get good speeds (usually above 100kBps) but only if I keep it in a certain place in a certain position. Since I use a laptop its highly inconvenient. I want to rent a BSNL modem with wifi which should also support my EVDO. Is there a modem suitable for me?

Dear Sujit,

I appreciate your time and effort in answering people’s quieris and solving problems… Its a great thing you are doing Sir!

I have one question.

I am trying to replace my old Teracom BSNL Type 2 modem with a friends’ old similar modem (ADSL2+ CPE/IAD, Model: AN1020-21)
I put in all the configuration settings same as in the previous one.
I still don’t see the Internet light coming on – on the replaced modem and no internet connection.
I checked and saw that the username and pwd on the “DSL Home” page are slightly different on the replaced modem. Do i need to change them? if so, how do i get these settings?

Thanks in Advance,
Deepak.

Click “Configuration” Menu then “Internet Connection” and “Delete all ” existing connection by selecting all.
Click “Add” button to create a new connection.Use VPI VCI 0 and 35>> Click “Next” button and select PPP over Ethernet option and click “Next” Select “Obtain IP address automatically”, Check “Enable NAT” and “ADD Default Route” options, Click “Next”
In Next page Give any name to identify the connection under Service name , enter your BSNL user id and password in respective fields. Select “Always ON”option. Click Next and press “Apply” button on next screen. After that click the “Reboot” menu under Admin main menu to reboot the Modem.

Dear Sujith,

I did all the settings as you sujjested. Thanks.
It does connect now to the Internet. The wireless is working but only when i set a Static IP on the computers.
The DHCP setting is set to “Enable”.
Is there another setting for automatic DHCP?
Also, do i need to set anything in the “Advanced Server Settings”?

Thanks and Regards,
Deepak

Sir

Could you tell me what is the difference between 3G routers, routers with modem, routers without modem…

Flipkart shows these categories…
I wanted to buy a router which can support both my broadband connection and a USB Internet Dongle – for Internet

I was searching but thought that I must search only for 3G routers. Then I found a review for Asus RT-N16 that it supports 3G dongles but then flipkart shows it under the “router without modem” category…

I am so confused…
How do I know whether a router is 3G compatible or not? Is there any technical spec which might help identify?

Do you have insight into this area? I would be grateful if you could help…
