Navigating Overseas with HTC Desire HD and Z

March 24, 2011 | by techlineinfo.com

Finding your way around your own city can be difficult enough at times, so it is hard to imagine easily getting to where you need to go when you travel to a foreign country. Since the introduction of Smartphones, navigating foreign places has become easier than ever. One of the most advanced navigation systems is offered by the HTC Desire HD and Z phones.

There has been a lot of hype surrounding the release of the new HTC Sense feature for the HTC Desire phones. If you thought the navigation on your phone couldn’t get any better, think again. HTC Desire phones now offer one of the most convenient and easy-to-use navigation systems available on a phone. Included free of charge with your HTC Desire phone, Sense has gotten rid of the annoying empty grey boxes we are used to experiencing when trying to quickly navigate around a map. Pre-cached maps mean that there is minimal loading time and scrolling and navigating
around maps is quicker and easier than ever.

Navigation Features on HTC Desire

On top of the standard features we expect from a navigation system, the HTC Desire has added a few simple yet very useful extra features.

One of the best features is the integrated compass that means you never have to wonder which way to turn. Rather than flipping your phone from left to right trying to work out whether you need to be heading north or south, the integrated compass does it all for you – turning when you turn.

Another wonderful feature of the HTC Desire is the ability to preview your journey. Whether you’re walking or driving, simply input the starting and finishing destination and Sense will simulate your journey for you in advance so you can see exactly where you’re going. This is great if you are traveling overseas as it gives you the opportunity to see what sites you are going to be passing on your way and allows you to allocate extra time to stop and take a peek.

Cached Maps save Data Roaming Charges

We’ve mentioned all the features of the HTC Desire’s navigation system, but one of the key benefits is using it when you travel overseas. Data roaming charges when abroad are notoriously very high so any ways that we can save a few dollars is always much appreciated.

All HTC Desire maps are pre-cached, meaning that they are loaded onto your phone before you go overseas so you don’t need to pay for any data roaming charges. In fact, you don’t need to connect to the internet at all to access the maps; you just need to make sure that you download maps for all the destinations you are visiting prior to leaving home. Alternatively you can connect your HTC Desire to the Wi-Fi network in your hotel or at a café.

You can download all city maps for free (they’re available for most major worldwide cities); however you will need to pay extra for navigation and other additional services.
