Frequently Asked questions on Mobile Number Portability
1. Can I switch over from CDMA service to GSM and vice versa ?
Yes .You can flexibly switch over from CDMA to GSM and vice versa. But you have to change the handset, because the technologies are different.
2. I am an Airtel customer of Delhi, Can I switch over to the Idea service of Chennai?
No- Presently Mobile Number Portability is available within the circle only.
3. Is there any Fee for MNP?
Yes- The new service provider will charge a fee (Port in Fee) for MNP. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has fixed a ceiling amount of Rs. 19/- for this. BSNL say that they will not collect the port in fee from the customers those who switch over to BSNL.
4. Is there any applying criteria for availing MNP facility ?
Yes.
- If you are post -paid customer there should not be any dues with your existing service provider. For pre-paid customers the credit balance will not be carry forwarded.
- You can switch over to a new service provider only after 90 days stay with the existing service provider.
- You have to wait minimum 90 days for second number porting. This is to prevent the misuse of this facility and prevent frequent switching.
5. I have changed my mind after submitting the application- Can I go back ?
Yes- You can withdraw the application within 24 hrs of submission. However the Port in fee will not be refunded.
6. How long it will take to switch over ?
After the application submission, it will take maximum four days. In J&K and North eastern states it is within 12 days.
7. Is there any downtime while porting the numbers ?
Yes- There will be a down time of approximately 2 hrs while porting the numbers. During this period you may not be able to use the number. Both incoming and outgoing services will be interrupted. The porting will be carried out between the mid night and morning 5 O clock, so the two hours outage may not affect considerably affect the subscribers.
8. How to Change your Service provider thorough Mobile Number Portability ?
The following procedure to be carried out for opting a new mobile service provider under MNP
- Send an SMS (Port <space>your mobile number) to 1900. Then you will get a reply SMS with a Unique Porting Code (UPC).
- Submit an application to the service provider where you want to shift with this UPC in a prescribed format (Remember the UPC will be valid only for few days).
- Your application will be processed by the new service provider and you will get an application receipt confirmation and the details of porting date.
- Once the porting is completed, confirmation message will be received.
Who will win the game?
TRAI estimates around 10% of mobile subscribers may change their service providers in the first year after the implementation. During the subsequent years this figure will be considerably reduced because the service providers will be compelled to give good quality of service.
Most of the CDMA mobile subscribers are waiting for MNP to opt a suitable GSM service. The leading CDMA service providers in India- Reliance and Tata know this fact very well. Both these players are providing GSM services also. Main reason for shifting from CDMA to GSM is the non availability of good CDMA handsets. GSM handset industry is really booming and attractive featurefull GSM handsets and Smart phones are available in market. Here CDMA fails. None of the leading mobile handset manufacturers are providing good CDMA sets.
Reliance CDMA has started ad campaigns through visual and print media to beat this challenge. Now they are presenting a wide range of CDMA handsets in market, but it is too late to stop the people.
The 3G services will also become a deciding factor. All the mobile service providers are not possess 3G spectrum. If someone wants to avail 3G service, he/she will switch over to the desired service provider by utilizing MNP.

hi
I was a subscriber of reliance cdma for more than 6 years. Recently I have opted for the change from Post paid to prepaid(few days back). When I submitted my application for migration to aircel under portability, I was told that I have to wait for a minimum of 90 days. Is it true. The number which I was using was with me for more than 4/5 years. Only the mode of payment to reliance has been changed from post paid to pre-paid. Does it affect. Would appreciate your clarification
regards
srinivasan

hi. i was using vodafone no. since 3 yrs, now has ported it to reliance gsm prepaid because of higher call charges in vodafone. but the company (rel) charges me extra rentals, high call rates, even higher than previous company etc etc. whenever i call to customer care, they just note my complaint and give me a complaint no. But it doesnot work.. i has called 100 of times there.
Now what can i do??
About 2 months has gone with this, spent a lot of money and time. Please help me.
Please Please Please.
I m a reliance GSM prepaid user and can assure that the call charges are minimum in reliance compared to all… ok you first opt for a basic plan either.. per minute/per second or per call.. you can do it for urself no need to call cust. care…. since u are new to reliance u will face some problem for a while… deactiivate all your preactivated add on in ur number by calling cust. care.. (such as caller tunes/monthly sms pack etc etc..) I think this should solve ur problem.. there is nothing like call rental in reliance prepaid… If u need any further help pl. reply

Dear Fren, Using the connection with others number is not a legal matter, if u want to use the same phone number in yor name u will have to follow the following steps carefully.
1. Surrender the connection by your friend at reliance customer care
2.Parallely apply for new connection in your name with the same phone number in reliance customer care.
3.When the new connection with same number will be active, after 90Days use of the connection you can go for number portability service with other service providers (like Vodafone, BSNL, Airtel etc.)
can i change my circle from up to haryana with the the same mobile no
No, you can do porting activity within the circle from where number belongs.

I ported my Airtel no to Vodafone on March ’11. Now I like to port again due to some dissatisfaction. But while approching to Reliance, they have squarely refused as it is not possible for them to port any Prepaid no and Airtel simply showed their reluctance saying it is very difficult and took almost 1month BLAH! BLAH! BLAH!… seems like other sytem introduced by TRAI ( e.g. Cable TV CAS), it is going to be flop….
As i want to convert from rel gsm to airtel or any other network ..please provide me information to convert…

I had ported my Vodafone number in last week of 2011, and followed all the procedures to get the BSNL service. After 8/10 days of porting, I got a call from BSNL for address verification and told that I ll get the BSNL service within 3 more days. But already 25 days gone after porting. Still I am unable to get the BSNL service. But vodafone SIM is still working. Now I am unable to understand, who is responsible for it; vodafone or BSNL. Can anybody help me to short out this problem???

I wish to change my Reliance CDMA connection to GSM Idea through number portability.
It’s a coperate connection and is using in Kerala Circle, wish to move to idea with the same number in Kerala, is it possible?
I had requested a port-out of Reliance CDMA mobile postpaid number 9380658000 via Vodaphone.
After the end of the validity period of the port-out code, I received a message from Reliance saying the request has been rejected due to the port-out code sent by Vodaphone not matching with the one generated by Reliance. However, when I checked with Vodaphone and Reliance customer care, I came to know that both port-out codes matched (RT681886)
I had called the Reliance Customer Care-Chennai Zonal office at 18602002011, and requested to book a complaint on the MNP port out rejected due to wrong reason, but they refused to take down the complaint stating the reason that they can’t raise a complaint if the MNP port-out code is expired.
Subsequently, I have generated another port-out request – RT714477 – and have applied through Vodaphone for MNP again around the 9 th of Feb. I have again received calls from Reliance asking for the reasons for porting out. It has been 13 days since the 2 nd request, and there is no response from Reliance. Whenever I have called the customer care, they say the request is still in process – the same response I got during the first port-out request period.
