Modem Configuration

Now let us configure the Modem for broadband connection. Here we are basically discussing about the configuration part for BSNL and MTNL connection.

Connect the Modem to the Ethernet port of your PC/Laptop with the supplied Ethernet cable. Power on the Modem and follow the steps .

  1. Open your web browser and type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar of browser. Then enter the user name “admin” and password “ admin” in the popup box. Now the first page of Modem Configuration page will be displayed. See the screenshot

2.   Click the Advance setup menu on the left sidebar. Now the following page will be displayed.

2 Configuration guide of ADSL WiFi Modem D Link DSL 2730 U for BSNL and MTNL

3.  In that page click the add button as shown in the screenshot. Now in the next page we have to enter the VPI/VCI values of ISP. Here the VPI value of BSNL and MTNL is “0” and VCI of BSNL is 35 and MTNL is 32.

3 Configuration guide of ADSL WiFi Modem D Link DSL 2730 U for BSNL and MTNL

  • Select the DSL Latency: Path 0
  • Select the DSL Link Type: EoA
  • Select Connection mode: Default
  • Encapsulation Mode: LLC/SNAP –BRIDGING

  • Select the IP QoS Scheduler Algorithm  to Strict Priority

8. Here you can decide which configuration mode of your Internet connection. That is PPPoE mode or Bridge Mode. In PPPoE mode the user id and password supplied by your internet service provider is stored inside the Modem itself. Here internet connection will be made through as soon as you switched ON your Modem. PPPoE mode is essential to share the internet connection with multiple PCs, Laptops, Smart phones etc.

In Bridge mode Modem will work as a bridge and you have to setup a dialer in your PC. In this modem internet connection sharing is not possible through Modem. To configure the Modem in Bridge mode just select the Wan Service type to “Bridging” and keep rest all settings default, then go to the final steps through clicking the “Next” button.

9. Now let’s configure the Modem in PPPoE Mode

Select the “WAN Service Type” – PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) then keep the rest settings default and click the Next button. See the screenshot of next page.

This is the important step where you have to enter the broadband userid and password supplied by your ISP (BSNL/MTNL etc).

  • PPP Username – Username supplied by ISP
  • PPP Password – Password supplied by ISP
  • PPPoE Service Name – You can type anything for reference ..Say BSNL
  • Authentication Method – Auto
  • Enable Firewall
  • Now Keep all the other settings Default. You need not to set anything

Click the Next Button

In this page Select the option “ Select DNS Server Interface from available WAN Interfaces” and click the Next button

Click the Apply/Save Button.

Hi Vishal,
First of all Nothing is required to be installed from the CD.
You can put manual ip, gateway and DNS in WiFi adapter too (Since DHCP is enabled normally it is not required to do this). Which OS you are using?

hi…thanx for prompt reply, i have windows 7 ultimate, i reseated my modem and followed your instruction, but still it was showing no internet connectivity on desktop, on modem everyhing is showing fine, then what i did was went to adapter setting>local area connection> properties>tcp ipv4 properties>use following dns services and put 218.248.255.212 and alternate as 218.248.255.139 and then i got internet connectivity, i kept obtain ip adress automatically. i got net on my desktop but still no internet on my wifi, please provide wifi settings if possible..

Are you able to connect WiFi? (Means your WiFi icon in Taskbar must show connected Icon). If yes then try to enter the DNS to WiFi adapter too
For that go to Control Panel>Network and Sharing center >Change Adapter settings
WiFi adapter> Properties TCP ipV4 and set the DNS
I will update the WiFi settings through a post tomorrow

Hi everyone, I bought this recently and it has been giving me all sorts of problems firstly it won’t connect to the router page (http://192.168.1.1) I feel the firmware is fauly. It has a very bad wifi range , and not as advertised.

It connects to the router page occasionally but I have to restart it every time I want to access it
Any Ideas? I am on an airtel broadband connection

I have followed the configuration procedure given to configure the DSL 2730u model modem router for BSNL broadband connection. I am unable to get the intent connection Even after several attempts also I could not able to succeed. In the diagnostics the error shown as TEST Authentication with ISP: FAIL,
Test ppp server connection: PASS
Test the assigned IP address: FAIL
Ping gateway default: FAIL
Ping primary domain name server: FAIL
WHen I contacted for on line support with D link, after following the same procedure they said that there is a problem with user ID and password, I checked the same through my serves providerBSNL and verified the user ID and password and deserted for 3 times as per my request. Now Modem supplier says it was the problem of service provider and service provider confirms there is no problem with the both and confirmed the same several times. it is a stalemate and I could not browse the net since last ten days. Before this I had an BSNL router and was running successfully but got damaged after usage of more than three years.I am unable to do any thing. Can u suggest me the better way to resolve the issue.

Than again the same thing, after 12 hours of run either internet stops (no light ) or RED light. initially i thought its problem from MTNL (as suggested by Sujith ) but i cross checked with my older setup and MTNL internet is running fine(using that only to post). Do a factory reset and reconfigure the Modem. If you are confirmed the problem is not with MTNL, then there may be some issues with D Link software/hardware. Are you using the same ADSL splitter supplied by D Link?

I gave back this modem, after a month had a lot of issues with WiFI I don’t suggest you buy it, and there are a lot of problems with the firmware which maybe causing you connection problems to BSNL, I had AirTel and it immediately connected , but the wifi range was so bad that even if I was next to the router I get 2-3 bars,

My reseller gave me the same product again in exchange for the one I had, it was brand new and packed but the new one didn’t even give an WiFI signal, and when I contacted D-Link they said it was faulty

So I just got a NETGEAR instead, I suggest anyone having wiFi problems to do the same, don’t waste your time on this faulty product

Also D-Link is very negligent in their customer service

In my organization I need Wi-Fi ADSL modems which can be used as a bridge (Switch not router) to my main net work and the each user connected should register on my main router (UTM) of the organization like one has to register on LAN. Presently if one user logs on that wifi modem first then all other user can share it without registering on my UTM and all Data transfer entries goes into the account of the first user.

Reply

Aniruddha Kumar January 16, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Thank you,
This is again to cofirm that the Wi-Fi routing is changed to bridge with my main router no the ADSL, hence it will work only the IP adresses created by my router not that particular ADSL Wi-Fi modem.

I still have problem. I have a web server with is hosted at port 80. In the NAT settings – I’ve entered relevant info and my DSL2750u indicates the management port will now be 8080, but does not seem to happen. I still access the DSL2750u from the internet at port 80 instead of my website!
Where do I set/force the device to listen on 8080?
Please respond, this is urgent or I’ll have to look for a replacement :(

Are you talking about the DHCP settings of Modem or Dynamic IP from BSNL side? If your modem is not supplying ip dynamically to your devices like PC, Laptop etc configure it manually in your network card. ip address 192.168.1.xx default gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS 8.8.8.8
alternate DNS 8.8.4.4

Red light blink indicates- You are not connected to MTNL.
Cross check the following.
1. Your account is activated or not.
2. MTNL user id and password.
3. VPI/ VCI settings — it should be 0 and 32 (0 and 35 is the settings of BSNL)
