untitled1 Comparison of Reliance Net Connect broadband plus, Tata Indicom Photon and BSNL EVDO + Review

The advertising campaign of various Internet service providers  create confusion among customers to select a service. Reliance Net connect and Net connect broadband Plus are different like Indicom  Photon Plus and Plug to Surf . EVDO, EDGE, Broadband, High speed Internet… all these terms make things more complicated for an average customer. Here let’s compare the services and tariff rates of  the three major Wireless broadband players of India ( Reliance, Tata Indicom, BSNL EVDO)

RELIANCE NETCONNECT BROADBAND PLUS

Reliance Net Connect + Broadband and simple reliance Net connect creates a lot of confusion. Reliance Net connect broadband using EVDO technology and the USB device is different in both the cases. The maximum speed of CDMA (IX) technology is 144 kbps (18KBps) and  for EVDO technology it is 3.1 Kbps(387.5 KBps). Reliance Net Connect Broadband coverage is limited to only a few cities( List shown below). Advertised 3.1 Mbps will be available only at these cities. Rest all places the speed will be limited to 144 kbps.

  • Speed up to 3.1mbps in reliance Broadband network
  • Upload speed up to 1.8 mbps

Hi All,
BSNL EVDO is obviously the winner but before purchasing the device make sure your area has good connectivity. I would rather suggest check if some of your friends has the device then borrow it and try it at your home. If you feel you are getting good speeds[.5mbps in the worst case] then only go for it. If you dont have friends then take the device on rental basis[200/- per month, minimum hire period is 3 months]. If you find the speed suitable to your needs then purchase the device. The total bill per month will be 1200+Taxes so it’ll be around 13k. If you just want to browse net, check mails then go for the NIC one[ I dont know the current per month bill for that, the EVDO bill was increased to 999/- from 550 2 months back only]. I’ve used this modem in Chennai for around 6 months and there I used to get 2tower signals but the speed was quite good[>.5mbps] and bill was 650/-. Now I moved to Pune and again took the device in rental basis. The shocking thing is that, though I get full tower siganls the speed is horrible its just 4-6 KBps(i.e around 40-50 kbps). This is just horrible and unacceptable. I’m literally pissed off. I cant even return the device before 3 months. So friends please exercise caution before buying/renting the device.

Thanks
Jala

Hey folks:

Thanks for this post. Find useful to me.

I am planning to move to ernakulam near ambalamugal/irumpanam. I am new to the area. Was working abroad.

High speed Net connection is very very important for me bcos I work from home a lot(I am in I.T). I cannot afford low speed or disconnects. I can always opt for BDNL broadband connection using landline. Not sure how much time it takes to get a connection. I am in cherthala at the moment working from relative’s house. Planning to move to ernakulam.

I need help/advice/suggestions.

Thought purchasing a bsnl evdo wireless device which could help me when I move to ernakuam. THis way I can work from day 1 , after I move to ernakulam. Then I saw this post and is hesitant. I do know that there are other options(tata/reliance). Can someone suggest speeds in ernakulam area for tata/reliance ?

Also as an alternative to bsnl broadband using landline, what are other broadband options? I know that Asianet has bradband using cable line.

Any advice/help would be very helpful.

Thanks

Hi, Thomas, Since you are moving to Ernakulam, I think now BSNL 3G may be the better option (You need a 3G mobile or modem). Check the availability of 3G coverage in your area. Can you specify your requirement? Such as unlimited download, bandwidth etc? If your move is of permanant nature then BSNL broadband (land line) is the best option in terms of speed and economy.

sojan December 4, 2010 at 8:11 PM

hello thomas me too frm cherthala,, in ernakulam bsnl 3g and reliance broad band is best.. u can choose any of them,, bsnl land line also have super speed but the worst thing is automatically disconnecting when downloading large size files,,

THomas A May 10, 2010 at 11:06 AM

Thanks Sujith.

I was looking for unlimited download.

Move nature: We will be renting a place for at least 6 months.

Is BSNL broadband reliable? Any disconnects/disruption in connections?
I do use one in Cherthala and we do have connection issues for bsnl broadband. At times, we lose it.

I am also looking at alternaives for BSNL broadband. Please suggest who are other broadband players in ernakulam/cochin, especially in ambalamugal/irumpanam area.

Once again, thanks for your help.

OK, If you don’t like BSNL then the alternative is Airtel broadband, It is available in Ernakulam . For coverage details go through this link http://tiny.cc/he5cx

You can make a call on +(91)-(484)-4444121 (Airtel broadband Ernakulam) for further details.

Sujith August 8, 2010 at 8:32 AM

Ganesh, You must consider many factors before taking connection. The technology used by both the companies are same. Do a little bit study on network coverage and customer support in your area. Ask your friends who are using the service. In the cities like Chennai almost all companies provide better service as it the matter of reputation. The main thing is that the coverage in your location.

Reply

Sujith August 26, 2010 at 8:35 PM

Hi Suraj,
If you need EVDO connection NIC will not work. You have to purchase separate EVDO device for that. First confirm from BSNL that whether your area is coming under EVDO coverage or not. All towers are not EVDO enabled. 3G is also a better option than EVDO.

Hi Sujith,

I stay in Palwal near Faridabad and I have bsnl broadband and most of the fixed line get disturbed and I have to see bsnl telephone exchange for complain and you know how their services are. I have limited plan and I do not use much but still I get full bill. :(

So, I am planning to buy any wireless internet connection. Can you please tell me which one would be best bsnl, tata, reliance, mts, airtel or idea?

I am too confused and not able to understand which one would be best. I just surf internet emails, songs, videos etc.

Can you please email me you opinion at harish.sharmain@gmail.com? I shall be really thankful to you.

Thanks,
Harish

Reply

Sujith December 4, 2010 at 12:25 PM

Hi Harish , Active internet surfing also takes good bandwidth. Youtube videos, Songs, Video chats etc are causing excess data usage. For BSNL excess charge per MB additional usage is very high. If you are an active internet user (Surfing also) go for an unlimited plan. In your location (Faridabad) Photon Plus, Relaince Netconnect Broadband connections are not available. Contact your BSNL exchange to know about the EVDO coverage. In this situation you will not be able to use a Wireless broadband connection in your area. The present available wireless internet services at your area can give a maximum of 144 Kbps (18KBps) speed including idea Netsetter. The best thing is that you may wait for few months for 3G service.
Can you figure out what type of problems you are facing with BSNL broadband? You can go through this article if you are facing frequent disconnection problem with BSNL broadband.

And My question to all –> Will 3G service gives me speed near 50KB/sec if I connect MOBILE to PC.(means Dial-Up connection) Till now i dont purchase 3G phone but i want to purchase EVDO or 3G mobile.SO WHICH IS GOOD? 3G is cheap,so can i go for it? b’cos i dont need speed in MBs. suggest please!!!

Sujith December 7, 2010 at 10:26 AM

Hi Sanket, 3G can give you much better and reliable service. You can get more than 50KBps. But still 3G in a budding stage. You can use your 3G mobile as a modem to surf net in computer.

Tata and Relaince are frauds, i bought Tata Photon Plus and the salesman at the Surat Bhatar Road shop assured me that i will get 3.1 mbps if not then they will replace the device and give new one. It only gives 1 mbps and is shit costly the device itself costs 2.5k non refundable, now i want to break this piece of shit device but what a waste of 2.5k it would be. The customer service guy visited our office after complaint, he was so thankful that we did not bust his balls, he says that normally wherever he goes people yell and also beat him up. He was thankful that we spoke to him civilly. Basically he is hired to go to angry customers (all photon customers) and listen to them vent their anger. Then his job is to call his superior and put the angry customer on to phone to the superior who is tucked away in safety. The superior told us, like a xxxxxxx doucebag lawyer, quite simple that they have advertised the service as “UPTO” 3.1 mbps, and that it doesn’t mean we will always get 3.1 mbps. That xxxxxx, the tone in which he said this made me want to rip his throat out. But that’s why they send poor thin people to listen to angry customers while they sit comfortable in their cabins. xxxxxx xxxxxxx all Tata, Ratan Tata, Reliance, Ambani, they become billionaires by cheating people like this, this one example shows how they must be cheating and circumventing logical and ethical rules. The phone leaks by radio just go to show how these xxxxxxx bribe their way to higher profits at the cost of everyday Indians. They maintain such an air of dignity and build sky high mansions, in reality they are just a bunch of well dressed thugs who have no qualms about cheating people off their hard earned money. I hate Tata and i wish i had forgiven the bad service of BSNL when i went first to BSNL office to buy a USB internet device. Those idiots told us to come after lunch break and so we said xxxx this government xxxx, let’s go buy Tata, even if more expensive at least we will be assured of good service and good internet speed

Reply

Karan Bhatia December 13, 2010 at 3:49 PM

Further more to my complaint, i just called up their 420 toll free number and found out that i need not pay Rs 100 extra for the “free” bag. So not only is Tata a cheat company but even all their retailers and channel partners enjoy cheating customers. I was asked to pay Rs. 2600 at the store with the bag, card and usb device included when the person at their 420 toll free said that the 3 things would come in 2500 only.

HI Sujith,
No i think i have used very suitable words to describe my feeling towards Tata photon plus and Tata in general too, i really don’t worry if such language will be bad for my business. It is the truth. Please approve the comment and also add to it that the Tata Customer Care called back after reading it and they try to dodge around the basic problem by asking useless things like membership number, this number that number, they said they will send an engineer when someone has already visited and said that problem cannot be solved, they thus do not even read the full problem, or despite knowing the full problem they try to ignore the fact that their device just cannot give more than 1-1.5 mbps speed when they are cheating people with promises of “upto” 3.1 mbps.

Best Regards,

Finally they read the complaint here and called back and said that i can come and collect the Rs 100 they charged me for the “free” bag. But what about the Rs. 2500 that i have been charged for a device that gives no more than 1 mbps when they are advertising a speed of 3.1 mbps. According to their lawyer-like-fine-print stance they advertised it as “upto” 3.1 mbps, saying that it will not always give 3.1 mbps, but it should at least touch 3-3.1 mbps sometime right? It never goes beyond 1-1.4 mbps, so what’ts the meaning of writing upto 3.1 mbps. As if this cheating was not enough. Now they are repeatedly calling and trying to convince me that they assure speeds of only 256 kbps and that i should be thankful that i get 1mbps. Despite me telling the caller sternly 10 time he continued to repeat the line like a broken recorder “1 mbps is enough”, not listening to what i was saying at all, what a bunch of machine fed morons. First they sell us short then they tell us that we have not got less, that we should in fact be thankful that we are getting more than 256 kbps. Wow. Haramiyon ka jawab nahi.

Hi Karan,
In India definition of broadband means internet connection with an assured minimum bandwidth of 256 Kbps. Speed of mobile broadband connections depends upon many factors. Signal strength, number of active users in a particular tower during a particular time, distance from tower etc. Before taking a mobile broadband connection it is always important to check the speed at the customer premises. I think some technical issues or heavy network congestion in your area. They must look into that. My friend is using Tata Photon connection in Kochi, he is getting consistent bandwidth above 2mbps. In legal point of view they are safe and the customer can’t win a legal battle.

of course they are clear in legal pov, which they cleared in the very first time we made the complaint to them, it seemed they were ready with the answer as they give it to 100s of people daily. The point is that they steered clear from helping us at all from the very first complaint – when he smartly pointed out that it is “upto” 3.1 not 3.1 (but the fact is that it never goes above 1-1.4 mbps) ,. and now that i am abusing them on the net, i am getting 5-6 calls from their cs executives from ahemadabad, chandigarh, bangalore, the local store in surat where i purchsed from and so many others. It just goes to show that sometimes having a loud voice and abusing the hell out of them pays.

If i wanted an assured 256 kbps connection i would not have paid 2.5k to buy the device and spend 750 a month on the connection with a limit of 5 gb. They are cheating customers and they know it.

Hi Sujith,

I am currently staying in Mumbai and have an airtel broad-band connection here. I am going to my hometown Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh for around 10 days. Since their is no internet connection at home, I need some on the go internet connection for few days. Kindly advice which of these service would be better, and also which one would be suited for a short-term usage. My usage would be mostly net-surfing and emailing and downloading important documents etc. on my laptop.

Thanks and Regards,
Avinash

Hi Avinash, I don’t think you can have a mobile broadband connection at Jhansi. You can use Tata photon Whiz or Reliance netconnect. These will be sufficient for normal net browsing and emailing.

Sandeep, how much is the speed that your device gives? 1mbps? 1.4 mbps? .4 mbps? don’t tell me 3.1 mbps because everyone here knows thats a lie and you will look like an idiot if you say so. I’m asking about the average speed you get after 10 tests at different times of the day and night done at http://www.speedtest.net

go do the test there on your demo device and give us the link of those average speeds, if it is anywhere near 3.1 mbps, only then come here trying to spam and sell your shite device, otherwise give it back to ratan tata and ask him to shove it up his ass

hi to all and new year wishes to all,
i am planning to move to Puthur,Palakkad and want a net connection , after seeing the post even i am confused on what to purchase.
There is a reliance netconnect tower 800m away from my home (which i checked after the sales guy told me), now there is no way i can get a connection for checking the speed since as none of my friends are using and as well as they are not giving any pre paid options in that centre for time being.

So i would like to know whether this tower of reliance will help me in getting the prescribed speeds as mentioned.?

Hi Varun, Call the Reliance sales rep to your place, tell him that before taking connection, speed verification is required.

None, all are chors, here open these pages
http://www.reliancenetconnect.co.in/comparison.html
http://www.tataphoton.com/tata-photon-plus-on-computer.aspx#tab04

Notice how their syndication gang criminal sales works. They group together do a meeting and decide to con all consumers with the exact same product, just different brands, even if they are able to provide a higher speed, they will cap the average speed to .5 mbps, you will never in your life get even 3 mbps, not even 2 mbps, if you get 1 mbps then thank your stars.

Notice how the two very different companies have the exact same information displayed on their pages. They both also list the number of the DoT for placing complaints, same number, which i tried, the number no one picks up, and the email i got a reply to go to the DoT website, see how these people bribe their way to Billions! A billion helpless stupid gullible indian customers for their fat ass bank account. No laws for these suit-and-boot criminals. They close the complaints without providing satisfactory solution. I keep complaining and they keep closing the complaint. Before a customer falls prey to their substandard product they give no information that they will only be providing 500 kbps average and not 3100 kbps as they advertise on TV. In one corner of their website they have put this information. Maybe they added it recently too as i dont remember seeing this earlier.

Here see these two images, their info on “compare” various internet connections is exactly same except the names of their brands

Don’t buy any! Or you will be pulling your hair out

Finally today i got the refund from Tata Photon+ after weeks and weeks of persistent complains and complain numbers, i even went so far ahead as recording the calls and the answers that the call centre executives were giving (we only provide 256 kbps, we said upto 3.1 in the ad campaign and not 3.1 exact, and so on).

So i emailed Tata Customer Care (their 121 number surprisingly is not accepting calls from my Tata Indicom Phone anymore ;) we will throw away this Tata Indicom Walky phone away as soon as we buy some other Walky, pathetic voice quality and battery life.

This was my email to Customer Care of Tata Photon+ today: complaint number 235487

So Mr. Refund (mobile number 09227910037) came to our house today 15/01/2011 and gave us Rs. 2400 refund and took the Photon+ device, what is the bill outstanding, and email us confirming this refund, i was surprised to see no official receipt being given for this transaction

Complaint has been successfully registered. Please note the Complaint No : 235487 for future reference.

So all you people who are sick of getting snail speed on Tata Photon after promises of
“upto 3.1″ do what i did, call 121, then press 4 then 2, and register the complaint, take the complaint number and record the call, do this until they give you at least 2-2.5 mbps (yes they can, their own executive told me that their mumbai based server can manually release more speed for selected users, and thus vice versa they can also mass reduce the speeds of lakhs of customers in order to add a few lakh more – like fitting 300 people in a train coach meant to seat only 100, classic indian jhol, jugaad and setting.

Good luck with Tata all of you im going to now go and buy BSNL

Hi Jalaj, If you have 3G service available in your area, then it will be the better option. You can check the speed by using http://speedtest.net/ . You can connect use your 3G mobile phone as a modem to surf internet in computer. Nokia N 72 is not a 3G mobile so you can’t use.
