Google has acquired Aardvark, the young and leading social search engine, which provide you the best person to answer your question in a particular topic. Web world witnessed the potential growth of this different concept, since the beta launch(March 2009)

Vark says about the acquisition by Google – “We want social search to reach hundreds of millions people around the world, and joining with Google lets us reach that scale — we’re also excited to work with the team at Google: our company has a culture that was inspired by Google in many ways, and we have a lot of respect for the folks who work there”

Now you can join Vark by signing up with your Google id through www.vark.com . Aardvark is available as a Google application too. Once you join the Vark with Google id, Advark can be added in your chat contact, can ask and answer the relevant questions.

Nowadays many people prefer mobile broadband service due to multiple reasons. The leading mobile broadband service providers in India are BSNL EVDO, Reliance Net Connect and Tata Indicom Photon Plus. Normal ADSL wired broadband connection can be very easily shared to multiple multiple machines. For that simply configure the Modem to PPPoE mode, If the modem is WiFi then can directly access the net through all Wi FI enabled computers simultaneously. If the Modem is not WiFI then connect the Ethernet (LAN) port of Modem with a Switch. Connect the PCs to LAN ports of the switch.

This method can not be made applicable for the mobile broadband and 3G devices.

There are two methods to share the broadband to multiple PCs

Through client server architecture : For this the broadband device is plugged into one of your PCs and the same to be configured as a server. Connect this PC to multiple machines through Switch or Hub. This method has a main disadvantages i.e the server machine to be kept always on.

Through a 3G router:

To share a mobile broadband connection or 3G connection to multiple PCs a suitable 3G router/ gateway is required. Earlier this was not available in Indian market, Now the 3G router Hame -HM-432R can be purchased though e Bay. It cost is around Rs 5000/-.

Features:

Compatible with all Indian EVDO and 3G services (BSNL EVDO, Tata Indicom Photon plus, Reliance Netconnect broadband, BSNL 3G and MTNL 3G)

WI FI speed upto 54Mbps

10/100 Ethernet RJ 45-1 (LAN)

Supported EVDO and 3G Devices:

Reliance Netconnect +: Huawei EC168C, Huawei EC1260, ZTE AC8710, ZTE 2726

Type 2: Type -II Modems having one Ethernet and one Wi Fi port each (Eg: Quidway WA 1003 A, Utstar WA3002-G1 etc)

Type 3: Type-III Modems are with four Ethernet ports (Eg: Smart Ax MT 841 type 3)

Type 4: Type-IV Modems are with Four Ethernet ports and with WI FI (ZTE ZXDSL 531, Siemens SL2-141, Smart AX MT 841 Type 4 etc)

If you purchase a Type -IV or type II Modem from open market, it will cost around Rs 2500/- to 3000/-. BSNL is providing the same for Rs 1600/-.

Quality: The quality and reliability of BSNL Modems are average. BSNL supplied Modems often fail to work properly in poor signal to noice ratio conditions, means frequent disconnection problems are predominant for BSNL supplied Modems.

Rent: If you have heavy internet usage and your Modem runs round the clock, then it is a better option to rent the Modem from BSNL because the Modem will be replaced by BSNL on failure. If you purchase the Modem from BSNL or outside, the warranty will be only for one year.

Limited Internet usage: If you have a limited internet usage, then it is better to purchase a Modem from BSNL (either one time or through installment scheme) because it is very much cost effective .

Purchase from open Market: The Modems like D link, Netgear and Lynk Sys perform exceptionally well even in poor signal to ratio conditions also. That means if your house is at considerable distance from nearest BSNL exchange, naturally the line attenuation will be more and the cheap quality Modems fail to perform reliably.

There are two ways to configure an ADSL modem for broadband connection. One in PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) and the another is Bridge mode.

PPPoE Mode

In this mode the modem works as router and the PPPoE session terminates on WAN port of router. The PPPoE client is in built in the modem and allocated by BRAS server gets assigned to WAN port of modem. The Internal network has to use the private IP and for Internet access NATing happens in modem. In PPPoE mode the modem is configured in such a way that the user id and password are stored inside the Modem. Internet connection will be established as you switch on the Modem.

Bridge Mode

In this mode the modem works as transparent Ethernet bridge and therefore you need to run the PPPoE client software ( for login authentication) on your PC/server. WIN XP systems have this feature inbuilt but for other operating systems you need to buy it from market. Some freeware like RASPPPoE, Enternet etc. are also available on the Internet.

Both the modes can be used as per the requirement and application. Here enumerating the main differences

PPPoE mode

User id and password stored inside the Modem.

Multiple PCs can be connected. For example most of the basic ADSL Modems having at least one ADSL port and one USB port. In PPPoE mode, can connect one PC to Ethernet port and one PC to USB port which enable simultaneous internet usage in both the PCs.

PPPoE mode is more secured.

For Torrents download, appropriate ports need to be forwarded.

Bridge Mode

In bridge mode user id and password to be entered in the dialer of computer.

Only single PC can be connected.

For torrents download port forwarding is not required.

Less secured because all the ports are open need good firewall to avoid virus infection.

If your mobile is subscribed with GPRS, EDGE or 3G service, the mobile can be connected to PC to surf internet. The mobile phone works as Modem. Here explaining the steps to configure Ubuntu 9.04 to connect the mobile phone to surf internet. There is no application software need to be downloaded. Here I’ve used Nokia phone to connect.

Step1

Connect the phone to the USB port of the computer with suitable data cable. Select the option “PC Suit” in mobile (For Nokia).

Step 3

In network connection select the tab Mobil broadband > +Add > Forward

Step 4

Select the service Country> India

Select the service provider from the list – Airtel, BSNL, Hutch, Idea, Vodaphone etc.

I’ve selected Airtel

Step 5

Click on the Network manager and connect the newly created connection

Frequent disconnection is a main problem experienced by most of the BSNL subscribers. It has been observed that the disconnection rate is much more during monsoon season. There are multiple reasons for frequent disconnection. Here some checks and tips to get rid of this problem.

Wiring: The leading-in cable (drop-wire) from the junction box (DP box) to your house, should be as straight as possible, should be a single length without any joints. The wires should not be coiled anywhere and should be away from electrical lines. With these types of irregularities, your phone might work fine but the DSL link will not hold and work satisfactorily. There should not be any parallel connection before the splitter. The connection to be made as shown in the figure.

Loose connections: Check for any loose connection in splitter, rozet, modem and telephone line.

Signal to Noise ratio and line attenuation: The ratio of Signal power to noise power is called Signal to Noise ratio. The more the signal to Noise ratio better the connectivity for almost uninterrupted connection the ratio should be more than 10.Line attenuation should be minimum. This figure can be checked from the Modem settings by typing http://192.168.1.1, user id and password “admin”.There are many reasons for low signal to noise ratio such as high cable resistance, rusted joints, more distance from exchange to user etc. If your signal to noise ratio is poor (less than 10) then locate the distribution box from where the connection is taken. Identify the cable pair and clean the contact and joint again check the signal to noise ratio again. If no significant improvement launch a complaint to check the line or change the pair.

Frequent disconnection is more observed in monsoon due to the bared joints. Seal all the cable joints if any.
